How to Bridge Crypto Safely Between Chains
By Oddrix ·
A bridge moves value from one blockchain to another. Blockchains cannot read each other directly, so every bridge needs some way to prove on chain B that something happened on chain A. How it does that decides how much you are trusting it.
The main kinds of bridges
- Native swap networks like THORChain hold real assets in vaults on each chain and swap them through liquidity pools. You send native ETH and receive native BTC, not a wrapped copy.
- Liquidity bridges (many of which LI.FI routes through) keep pools on both chains and pay you out of the destination pool, often in seconds.
- Lock-and-mint bridges lock your coin on one chain and mint a wrapped version on the other. The wrapped token is only as good as the bridge holding the original.
- Official rollup bridges (for example Ethereum to Base) are secured by the rollup itself but withdrawals back to Ethereum can take days.
What can go wrong
- Bridge exploits. Bridges hold large pools, which makes them targets. Prefer well-established routes.
- Wrong address or chain. Sending to an address on the wrong network is the most common user mistake.
- Delays and refunds. If a route cannot complete, funds are usually refunded, but it can take time. Do not panic and do not re-send.
- Fake support. Scammers watch for people asking about stuck bridges. Real support never asks for your seed phrase.
A safe bridging checklist
- Start with a small test amount on a new route.
- Double-check the destination address and that it belongs to the right network.
- Read the quote: amount out, minimum received, fees and estimated time.
- Keep a little native gas on the destination chain so you can move the funds afterwards.
- Save the transaction hash. It is all you need to track the transfer in an explorer.
On the Oddrix bridge you get live quotes from THORChain and LI.FI side by side, with the Oddrix fee already included and the provider shown for each route.
FAQ
How long does bridging take?
From under a minute on fast liquidity bridges to around 30 minutes for routes that wait for Bitcoin or Ethereum confirmations. The estimate is shown with each quote.
What happens if a bridge transfer fails?
Most routes refund to the sending address or an address you specified. Track the tx hash in the provider explorer before taking any other action.
Not financial advice. Crypto is volatile and you can lose money. Oddrix never holds your funds or keys.
